Cliff Richard Wines—Vida Nova and Onda Nova
A celebrity wine is the meeting place for viticulture, money, artist and history. The perfect example of such a vineyard is Adega do cantor—how beautiful can words get? Adega do cantor means the singer’s wine cave or cellar. Sir Cliff Richard is the proud owner of this vineyard.
The name of the great singer’s property is Quinta do Moinho (Mill Farm). The two great products of the vineyard owned by Sir Cliff are the Onda Nova and the Vida Nova.
The grapes for the wines indeed are gathered from three quintas or farms. These are Quinta do Miradoura, Quinta do Moinho and Vale de Sobreiro.
The story goes back to 1997 when Sir Cliff Richard a UK pop icon of the 1950s decided to grow grapes on his property in the Algarve in Portugal. The Algarve is the southern most tip of Portugal. The pop star is known the world over for his famous singles like ‘The Young Ones’ and ‘Devil Woman.’ His connection with Portugal extends nearly to half a century. He has been honored with title of Commander of the Portuguese Order of Prince Henry. He was honored by the Queen with a Knighthood in 1995.
If you are looking for history in the Sir Cliff Richard story there is plenty. He was born in the days of Empire in 1940 at Lucknow in India. The Sun had not yet set on the colonial domains of Queen Elizabeth.
If you are looking for exemplary viticulture then the three Quintas grow great varieties of Syrah, Aragones, Trincadeira, Verdelho and Mourvedre.
The bottled wines are famous as Onda Nova made from a single variety of grape and Vida Nova which is a blend of all the grapes of the region. A true vintage wine is the Vida Nova Tinto 2008 a Syrah Aragonez. A recommended wine is the Onda Nova Syrah 2006 with a promise to mellow in your collection.
